As the man who will forever hold the top position on Tony's Movie Speak game "Leader Board" with 8366 points (unless there's somebody else crazy enough to answer the same 66 questions over and over again -- sometimes beer was involved), I'd like to ask Tony if shameless self-promotion is forgivable in Hollywood if the script one is promoting is totally awesome?

Shameless self-promotion is generally the province of the amateur whose script doesn't speak for itself.
If your script is truly excellent you can throw it out of your car on the Hollywood Freeway and it will end up being recognized for what it is by someone who matters.

I am writing an adaptation to a biography of a famous musician. How do I make sure that I can use all the famous characters mentioned in the book for my screenplay?

It depends on several factors: Are they living or dead? Are the references conceivably slanderous? Are the portrayals accurate? etc. Bottom line: consult a lawyer.
